The Fourth of July is almost here and many Americans, including me, are on vacation this week in conjunction with the holiday. So this week, instead of writing and publishing an article here for your perusal and consideration, I suggest that you write a post and share your talent!
Specifically, I challenge all of you to write a fiction or nonfiction article on an Independence Day-related topic. It might be a discussion of the upcoming elections — federal, state or local. You could write about the historical significance of July 4, recent court decisions interpreting questions about the extent and nature of the freedoms we enjoy here in the United States, your opinions about the war in Iraq, the economy or other current events. What are you thankful for this Fourth of July? What does “freedom” mean to you?
Was one July 4th particularly memorable for you? Tell us about it or about how your family celebrates. Are there traditions that you are carrying on for your own children? Or do you celebrate in a different way every year?
If you live in a country other than the United States, you might compare the freedoms you enjoy with those guaranteed to Americans under our Constitution. Have you visited the United States? What impressed you the most about our country? What is your most vivid memory of your visit?
For you fiction writers, perhaps you can tell a story about how a particular character or family celebrates the Fourth, or describe an especially poignant event that your character(s) experienced or witnessed in relationship to the Fourth of July.
Post the link to your article in a comment below so that I can visit your site and enjoy your efforts!
And have a very happy and safe Independence Day!

Nice assignment!
Lets see what I can come up with… Maybe I will write about when I was a little kid and would buy out the fireworks stands of Piccolo Petes and used to make homemade explosives for the next few months!!
Several years ago, I was inspired to write a poem about the 4th of July. If poetry is okay, here is a link to my post.

this new grandmommy gig is kicking my butt lately so i am going to cheat, sort of. here is what the 4th has meant to me and always will mean to me…a post from July 4, 2007. One year later, it is still relevant to me.
Happy Fourth everyone.

I wasn’t going to write anything special for the 4th, but when I saw your challenge it brought up memories of how my family celebrated the 4th when I was growing up:
